BVA baseball bounced in consols
Belle Vernon Area baseball’s season came to an end last week, as the Leopards fell in the Class 4A consolation with a trip to the state playoffs on the line. A five-run sixth inning was the undoing for the Leopards, who suffered a 7-3 loss to Central Valley last Tuesday at Washington & Jefferson’s Ross Memorial Park. Parker Lind worked five strong innings for BVA, as he allowed one run on three hits, with six walks and 10 strikeouts. Cole Matusik, Seth Tomalski, and Connor Bergman produced RBIs for the Leps, with Bergman smacking a solo home run to stake Belle Vernon to a 3-1 lead in the fifth. With the loss, Belle Vernon Area ended the season with a record of 15-8.
Westmoreland softball seniors dot all-star game
The second installment of the Western Pa Softball All-Star Game later this month will feature a slew of Westmoreland County standouts. The rosters were unveiled last week, with nine local seniors spread between two teams for the game at Plum High School at 7 p.m. June 24. Team Gold will include Burrell’s catcher Bella Stewart and shortstop Pyper Ferres, Franklin Regional’s second baseman Ciara Camacho and shortstop Toryn Fulton, third baseman Cam Ponko and outfielder Lorryn Sepe of Penn-Trafford, and Southmoreland catcher Makayla Etling. Meanwhile, Team Black will feature Mount Pleasant Area’s pitcher Gigi Stanek and first baseman Rachel Minteer of Norwin.
District 31 American Legion commences play
Legion play began for District 31 American Legion last week, as Latrobe, Young Township, and Lower Burrell all snagged wins. Last Tuesday, Latrobe knocked off Mount Pleasant 5-3, while Young Township bested Murrysville 9-6. On Thursday, Lower Burrell edged Mount Pleasant 6-5.
Seton Hill’s Moore announces retirement from coaching
Seton Hill University softball coach Cassie Moore announced her retirement from coaching in May. Moore guided the Griffins for the past three campaigns, going 29-17 overall this spring, including 18-10 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). In the conference tournament, the Griffins lost to Kutztown University and Shippensburg University to conclude the season. Prior to her time at Seton Hill, Moore led Bethany College for four seasons, and also had head coaching stints at Newbury College and Genesee Community College. As a player, Moore competed at Mars Hill University.
