Jethawks surge in D31 legion

Although Latrobe hasn’t yet reached the top of the District 31 American Legion standings, the Jethawks have prevailed in all of their league games to this point. Latrobe has gone a perfect 7-0 in D31 action, compiling 28 points, which is tied for second behind only Bushy Run. Last week, the Jethawks edged Lower Burrell 7-6 at Legion Keener Park on Tuesday, and then followed with a lopsided 13-1 win against Lower Burrell the following day at ABC Field. On Thursday, Latrobe bested homestanding Young Township 3-2 at Bertolino Field. Playing outside of the league over the weekend, the Jethawks blanked Buckhannon, but fell to Beckley, Bridgeport, and Clarksburg in the Timbuck Shields Tournament in Bridgeport, West Virginia. The Jethawks return to D31 action on Tuesday, traveling to Mount Pleasant.

WPIAL approves Westmoreland transfers

The WPIAL board of directors rendered verdicts on numerous student-athlete transfers last week, including approving three moves that featured Westmoreland County competitors. Jackson Mickens, a star football player for Southmoreland last year, was granted eligibility for his move to Uniontown Area. Mickens, a rising junior, was previously enrolled at Geibel Catholic, which has a co-op with the Scotties for football. Micken, who has garnered Division I interest, paced Southmoreland with 11 touchdowns last season. Meanwhile, a pair of basketball players who previously suited up for St. Joseph were approved to compete for Burrell this upcoming season. Nicholas Black and Chase Porter were both deemed eligible to play for the Buccaneers.

Hempfield’s Flynn steps away

After five years leading Hempfield Area girls volleyball, Ashten Flynn has stepped down from her position as head coach. Last fall, the Spartans went 12-3 overall, including 9-1 to take first in Class 4A Section 3. In the WPIAL playoffs, Hempfield Area garnered the seventh seed, but fell to No. 10 Canon-McMillan 3-1 in the opening round. Flynn is a graduate of Connellsville Area, where she was a First-Team All-Section performer for the Falcons. Flynn also coached club volleyball for several years, including with No Borders Volleyball.

Bobcats MBB stars show out in Portugal

The University of Pitt-Greensburg men’s basketball team was well-represented recently for an international tour on the hardwood. Five Bobcats graduates participated on the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) All-Star Team for a four-game trip through Portugal. The quintet consisted of Trent Rozich, Jackson Byer, Matthew Marinchak, Michael Bigley, and Joziah Wyatt-Taylor. Marinchak posted 13.5 points per game to pace the former Bobcats, who helped the AMCC squad go 4-0 against Lisbon Select, CD Povoa, Braga GDAS, and Galitos.
