Latrobe Jethawks fall in Region 7 Championship

The Latrobe legion baseball team came up one win shy of reaching the state tournament, as the Jethawks stumbled in the Region 7 Championship last Wednesday. The Jethawks made it to the championship with an undefeated mark in the double-elimination tournament, but lost twice to Philipsburg, falling 2-1 and 5-3 to the Phils. Latrobe opened the Region with a 5-2 triumph against Saint Michael, blanked Claysburg 11-0, edged Philipsburg 1-0, and squeaked past Saint Michael 4-3 to reach. Bushy Run, Homer City, and Burrell also qualified for the Region 7 Tournament, with Homer City and Burrell each going 1-2, and the Beavers finishing 0-2.

Munchinski promoted to co-head coach for GL softball

Greater Latrobe softball will have a unique coaching arrangement next season, as the Wildcats will have co-head coaches. While longtime coach Bob Kovalcin remains at the helm, he will be joined by Dana Muchinski, who was promoted from an assistant role. Munchinski is slated to oversee the Wildcats when Kovalcin retires. Dana’s daughter, Makayla, is the head coach for Albert Gallatin softball. In the spring, the Wildcats went 10-9 overall, including 7-5 in Class 5A Section 2. Qualifying for the WPIAL playoffs, GL lost to West Allegheny in the first round.

LV’s Weller Field receives grant for upgrades

Ligonier Valley’s football stadium will be getting major renovations in the near future, as Weller Field was awarded a $1 million grant. The grant was received as part of the statewide Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program. The Ligonier Valley School Board will vote on how to apply the grant next month, potentially including improvements to the field house, press box, and concessions.
