Hall headlines Jeannette HOF

The latest class of the Jeannette Athletic Hall of Fame was announced last week, and legendary football coach and player Roy Hall is among the notable inclusions. Hall was featured in the coach category, as the Class of 1982 graduate guided the Jayhawks for 13 years as the head coach, compiling 116 wins and winning two WPIAL titles and one PIAA championship. Including his time as an assistant, Hall was on the Jeannette staff for 37 years. Hall will also be part of the team category with the 1981 football squad, which finished the campaign at 12-0, winning the WPIAL crown. The other football standouts in the class are Charles Chamberlain (Class of 1974) and Demetrious Cox (2012). The rest of the class includes: Alvin Maloy (boys basketball – 1995), Jamie Morrison (girls athletics – 2006), Winter Hall (girls athletics – 2004), Michael DePalma (wrestling – 2011), Gerald Foster Sr. (track and field – 1976), David Bone (all-around athlete – 1995), Alex Piasecky (legend – 1938), and John Troglio (Paul Gaudi Contributor Award – 1961). The class will be enshrined on Oct. 16 at the Jeannette American Legion, and it will also be honored the prior night during Jeannette’s home football game against Fort Cherry.

Smith resigns from PT wrestling

Nate Smith’s tenure leading Penn-Trafford wrestling was short-lived, as the coach stepped down four months after taking the position. Smith, who competed on the mat at Franklin Regional and was an All-American at the University of Pitt-Johnstown, was promoted from assistant to head coach in April. He replaced Travis McKillop, who led the Warriors for four campaigns. Last season, the Warriors qualified for the WPIAL Class 3A team postseason, and defeated Baldin before falling to Connellsville Area.

Volchok tabbed Griffins WBB coach

Seton Hill University announced the hiring of a new women’s basketball coach today, as Nick Volchok was tabbed to lead the program. Volchok comes from the Division I ranks, where he served as an assistant coach at Marist University for the past three seasons. Prior to that, he was on the staff at Iona University for two campaigns. Volchok was also a standout on the hardwood, as he began his college career at Rockland Community College, and then transferred to Mercy University. He played professionally in Germany and Italy for three years. Under previous head coach Maeve Gallagher, the Griffins went 22-9 last season, reaching the NCAA Atlantic Regional semifinals.

Saint Vincent unveils HOF class

Saint Vincent College revealed its Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2026 last week, a group that consists of three standout athletes, a record-setting coach, a contributor, and two historic teams. The class includes: Erin Hermann (Manella) (women’s soccer – Class of 2008), Kristin Consuegra (women’s volleyball – 2008), Zach Wilfong (men’s lacrosse – Class of 2011), Peter Turk (coach – men’s lacrosse), Dr. Aldo Prosperi (contributor – 1976), and the 1990-91 men’s basketball and 2016 softball teams. The 90-91 Bearcats men’s hoops team became the first in program history to advance to the NAIA Tournament, while the softball squad captured the first Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship and reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time. The class will be enshrined on Oct. 24, and will be recognized that day during the home football matchup against Geneva College.
