Wildcats football edges Panthers in Big East matchup
Chris Cochran notched a long touchdown and Sawyer Butina snagged an interception late to seal Greater Latrobe’s 13-7 home victory against Franklin Regional in the Class 5A Big East Conference last Friday. Cochran compiled 133 yards on the ground for the Wildcats, while QB Dom Scarton also found paydirt on a 2-yard run in the second quarter. Franklin Regional’s Dominick Devola accounted for the Panthers’ lone score, a 6-yard run, but he was intercepted by Butina with approximately 90 seconds left in the contest. While the Wildcats moved to 2-2 overall, and 1-0 in the conference, the Panthers tumbled to 0-4 on the season, including 0-1 in conference play. Greater Latrobe will trek to Armstrong this week to play the River Hawks, while Franklin Regional will host Gateway.

Vikings boys soccer surges atop standings
The Mount Pleasant Area boys soccer team stayed perfect in section play, notching a pair of victories to move to 5-0-0 in Class 4A Section 2. Last Tuesday, the Vikings whitewashed Greensburg Salem 5-0, and followed with a 1-0 road victory against Waynesburg Central two days later. In the home triumph against the Golden Lions, Tyke Snyder tallied a pair of goals, while Grayson Gardner registered the clean sheet. Against the Raiders, Snyder accounted for the only marker. Although the Vikings fell 4-2 at Greater Latrobe in a nonsection tilt on Saturday, Mount Pleasant boasts an overall mark of 6-2-0.
Jeannette girls soccer cancels season
Due to an insufficient number of players, Jeannette girls soccer cancelled its 2025 season last week. The Jayhawks initially had 14 players sign up during the offseason, but that number was trimmed drastically as the season arrived. By rule, a soccer team cannot start a match with fewer than eight players. Prior to making the decision to cancel the rest of the campaign, the Jayhawks postponed their first five contests, including section matchups against Greensburg Central Catholic, the Ellis School, and Apollo-Ridge. Derek Cuthbert, who guided Penn-Trafford to a WPIAL championship earlier this century, was hired in the offseason to lead Jeannette.

She finished as a four-time All-American in the event, twice was recognized as a Capital One Academic All-American, and was also named the PSAC Field Athlete of the Year as a senior.
