WPIAL girls basketball first round game recaps from Monday, February 17th 2025:

Central Valley 55 Belle Vernon 46 (4A)

No. 10 Belle Vernon couldn't capitalize on a slim halftime lead dropping a WPIAL first round 4A game to seventh-seeded Central Valley 55-46. The Leopards held a 29-28 advantage at the break but were outscored by the Colts 14-4 in the third quarter. Aubrey Brown posted 13 points to lead Belle Vernon (11-12) with teammate Saylor Lee adding 11. Nyah Hayes produced 16 points for the Warriors (15-7) who will take on No. 2 Oakland Catholic Thursday in the quarterfinals.

Blackhawk 60 Yough 12 (4A)

After claiming its first playoff win in 15 years last week, Yough was overmatched by top-seeded Blackhawk 60-12 in the WPIAL Class 4A first round battle of the Cougars. Homestanding Blackhawk jumped out to a 24-4 lead after the first quarter, and was paced by Aubree Hupp, who scored 24 points. While Blackhawk (21-2) moves on to play No. 8 Laurel Highlands on Thursday in the quarterfinals, No. 16 Yough’s season concludes with a mark of 12-12.

North Catholic 62 Mount Pleasant 23 (4A)

Mount Pleasant Area couldn’t slow down North Catholic in the first half, as the Trojans cruised to a 62-23 home win in the WPIAL Class 4A first round. Third-seeded North Catholic outscored the No. 14 Vikings 17-2 in the first quarter and 29-7 in the second stanza. Danica Trainer scored nine points to lead Mount Pleasant, which wraps up the campaign with a record of 6-16. Sam Weir anchored the North Catholic offense with 14 points, while Brady Wehner tallied 13 points. The Trojans (20-3) move on the quarterfinals on Thursday to play No. 6 South Park.

South Park 40 Burrell 24 (4A)

A sluggish start doomed Burrell in a 40-24 loss at South Park in a WPIAL Class 4A first round clash. The No. 11 Buccaneers were outscored 14-2 in the opening frame by the sixth-seeded Eagles. Casey Brancato scored seven points to pace the Bucs, who finish the campaign at 13-10. South Park was led by Brooke Paylo, who netted 13 points. The Eagles (16-5) advance to the quarterfinals on Thursday against No. 3 North Catholic.

Bethel Park 46 Franklin Regional 45 (5A)   LISTEN BROADCAST

A furious fourth-quarter rally came up just short for Franklin Regional, as the No 5 Panthers fell at home to No. 12 Bethel Park 46-45 in the WPIAL Class 5A First Round. Trailing by 16 points in the second half, and facing a 12-point deficit late in the fourth quarter, the Panthers closed the game on a 13-2 run, but time expired after Anna Novelli’s layup pulled FR within a point. Franklin Regional, which outpaced Bethel Park 23-10 in the fourth, was led by Madi DeRiggi’s 23 points, including 14 in the final quarter. Conversely, Ella Sabatos tallied 16 points for BP, while Fiona O’Neill scored 11 points. After claiming a share of the first section title since 1979, the Panthers end the season with a record of 15-7. The Black Hawks (12-11) advance to the quarterfinals for a matchup against No. 13 Mars Area on Wednesday.

Penn-Trafford 63 Plum 46 (5A)

Third-seeded Penn-Trafford shrugged off a sluggish start and cruised to a 63-46 victory over No. 14 Plum in a WPIAL 5A first round game. The Warriors held a slim 12-10 lead after one but by the time halftime hit, P-T had built up a 38-24 advantage. Belle Klobucar's 14 points paced Penn-Trafford (23-0) with teammates Lauren Marton and Torrie DeStefano netting 12 a piece. Serena Carnahan recorded a game-high 19 points for the Mustangs (10-13). The Warriors will face No. 6 Thomas Jefferson on Wednesday in the quarterfinals.

South Fayette 57 Greensburg Salem 30 (5A)

Facing top-seeded South Fayette, Greensburg Salem’s season came to an end with a 57-30 road loss to the Lions in the Class 5A First Round. Freshman Vienna Jevicky tallied a team-best 11 points for the No. 16 Golden Lions, who conclude the campaign with a mark of 13-10. Haylie Lamonde posted a game-high 19 points for South Fayette (22-1), as the Lions advance to the quarterfinals to battle ninth-seeded Baldwin on Wednesday.

Thomas Jefferson 68 Greater Latrobe 47 (5A)

Hampered by a lopsided third quarter, Greater Latrobe fell to Thomas Jefferson 68-47 in the opening round of the WPIAL Class 5A playoffs. The homestanding and sixth-seeded Jaguars outpaced the No. 11 Wildcats 27-11 in the decisive stanza to seal the victory. Carley Berk amassed a team-best 15 points for Greater Latrobe, while Maggie Maiers added 12 points and Brylee Bodnar scored 11 points. The Wildcats wrap up the season with a mark of 11-11. Kaylee DeAngelo tallied 20 points for the Jaguars (19-4), while Maggie Spell scored 19 points. TJ moves on to the quarterfinals to meet No. 3 seed and undefeated Penn-Trafford on Wednesday.

Greensburg Central Catholic 66 Brownsville 31 (3A)

Led by Erica Gribble, Greensburg Central Catholic cruised to a 66-31 home win against Brownsville Area in the first round of the WPIAL Class 3A bracket. The No. 2 Centurions (18-5) received 27 points from Gribble, while Jayla Peterson posted 16 points. The Falcons (13-10) were paced by Skyler Gates’ 17 points. GCC moves on to the quarterfinals next Wednesday, and will meet seventh-seeded Quaker Valley.

Keystone Oaks 56 Ligonier Valley 31 (3A)

No. 13 Ligonier Valley dug itself a deep hole, down 24-4 after one, in a 56-31 loss to No. 4 Keystone Oaks in a WPIAL 3A first round battle. Sydnee Foust scored nine points for the Rams (7-15) while Laney Wagner tallied 11 points for the Golden Eagles (19-2) who will face No. 12 Ellwood City on Wednesday in the quarterfinals.
