Three area teams advance to WPIAL wrestling semifinals

Franklin Regional, Burrell, Mount Pleasant each secured a pair of wins Wednesday night

Franklin Regional 38 Greater Latrobe 24

The homestanding Panthers won five consecutive bouts en route to a 38-24 victory against the Wildcats in the Class 3A quarterfinals. For the No. 2 Panthers (18-0), Chase Smith, Ethan Cartwright, Troy McClelland, and Juliano Marion captured falls, Tyler Kapusta and Luke Ankney won via major decision, and Titus Colangelo and Nico Sarnic won by decision. Conversely, the Wildcats (8-4) received falls from Luke Willochell and Bradan Bronson, decisions by Hunter Snyder and Marco Scraton, and a forfeit victory from Leo Joseph. The Panthers advance to the semifinals, and will clash with Connellsville Area on Saturday at Peters Township High School.

Franklin Regional 42 Pine-Richland 27

Franklin Regional received falls from Titus Colangelo, Chase Smith, Tyler Kapusta, Ethan Cartwright, and Juliano Marion to claim a 42-27 home victory against Pine-Richland in the Class 3A first round.

Greater Latrobe 43 West Allegheny 22

Greater Latrobe won six bouts in a row to oust West Allegheny 43-22 in the Class 3A first round at Franklin Regional High School. Brady Cole scored a pin for the Wildcats, while Evan Pancoast, Luke Willochell, Hunter Snyder, and Cody Krall all notched forfeit wins.

Trinity 43 Norwin 19

Although the Knights held a 16-15 lead against top-seeded Trinity, the Hillers won six of the final seven matches to cruise to a 43-19 win in the Class 3A quarterfinals. Host Trinity received falls from Jacob Wright, Zane Garner, Blake Reihner, Bodie Morgan, and Robert Allison. In the setback for Norwin (12-6), Aiden Pham won by fall, Jack White scored a major decision, and Landon Sidun also gained a decision. The Hillers (10-0) will meet Bethel Park in the semifinals on Saturday at Peters Township High School.

Trinity 55 Kiski Area 18

Top-seeded and host Trinity overmatched the Cavaliers 55-18 in the first round of the Class 3A bracket. On Monday, Kiski Area edged Moon Area 33-24 to advance into the field of 16.

Mount Pleasant 37 Derry Area 31   WATCH BROADCAST

Vikings freshman Tristan Wtorkiewicz scored a decision in the final bout to secure the 37-31 victory for No. 5 Mount Pleasant Area against fourth-seeded Derry Area in the Class 2A quarterfinals. The Vikings (12-2) also received falls from Joseph Longhi, Jamison Poklembo, Stephen Predajna, Dylan Pitzer, and Nick Stabile, and a major decision via Charles Blanchard. The host Trojans (11-4) received pins from Nate Barkley, Brady Brown, and Anthony Mucci, a major decision courtesy of Brett Klim, a decision by Mason Horwat, and a forfeit by Jaden Gess. Mount Pleasant Area will face top seed Burgettstown in the semifinals on Saturday at Peters Township High School.

Mount Pleasant 32 Indiana Area 30   WATCH BROADCAST

Mount Pleasant Area edged Indiana Area 32-30 in the Class 2A first round at Derry Area. The Vikes received falls from Charles Blanchard and Dylan Pitzer.

Derry Area 47 Southmoreland 19   WATCH BROADCAST

Homestanding Derry Area notched a decisive 47-19 win against Southmoreland in the Class 2A first round. The Trojans received pins via Giovanni Beatrice, Brett Klim, Jeremiah Gess, Nate Barkley, Anthony Mucci, and Chris Kubisteck, while Landon Delara and Jake Govern notched falls for the Scotties.

Burrell 47 Bentworth 25

Five falls and two forfeits catapulted the second-seeded Buccaneers to a 47-25 win at home against Bentworth in the Class 2A quarterfinals. Burrell (12-2) received pins via Nico Zanella, Luke Boylan, Cam Baker, Carter Thomas, and Jake Stewart, while Ben Catello secured a technical fall and Isaac Lacinski and Cooper Hornack won via forfeit. Burrell will clash with Quaker Valley in the semis on Saturday at Peters Township High School.

Burrell 60 Hampton 6

Burrell overwhelmed Hampton 60-6 in the Class 2A first round. The homestanding Bucs received pins from Cooper Hornack, Calio Zanella, Ben Catullo, Isaac Lacinski, Luke Boylan, Cam Baker, Carter Thomas, and Julian Bertucci.
