GCC prevails in rivalry clash against Jeannette
Greensburg Central Catholic quarterback Samir Crosby had a monster performance last Friday, factoring in five touchdowns, as GCC bested Jeannette 44-27 in Class 1A Eastern Conference play. Crosby rushed 21 times for 147 yards and three scores on the ground, while he threw for 148 yards and two more TDs. In the setback, Jeannette’s Kymon’e Brown had a stellar effort of his own, as he compiled 17 carries for 205 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while adding 115 yards and two scores through the air on 11-of-20 attempts. Jerry Davis notched a 65-yard kickoff return score for GCC, while Jayce Powell added 74 yards receiving for Jeannette. The host Centurions moved to 4-2 overall, including a 3-1 mark in the conference. The Jayhawks, meanwhile, dipped to 1-3 in the conference, and 4-3 overall.
Greater Latrobe’s Tatsch out for season
Alex Tatsch, a standout football player for Greater Latrobe, will miss the remainder of his senior year with a shoulder injury. A Penn State linebacker commit, Tatsch will undergo surgery for the second time in as many years. Through his first five games, Tatsch compiled 56 carries for 716 yards and 10 total touchdowns at running back. He missed each of the past two contests, both losses, which dropped the Wildcats to 4-3 overall, including 1-3 in the Class 5A Big East Conference.
Ten county girls soccer teams clinch playoffs
Entering the final full week of the WPIAL girls soccer regular season, 10 Westmoreland County have clinched spots in the postseason. In Class 4A, Penn-Trafford, Norwin, and Greater Latrobe are all in. The Warriors pace Section 1 with a mark of 8-0-0, while the Knights are in second at 6-2-0, and the Wildcats sit at 5-2-0. In Class 3A, Franklin Regional and Kiski Area have secured playoff berths. The Panthers are in second place in Section 4 with a mark of 8-2-0, while the Cavaliers are one spot behind at 6-3-1. In Class 2A, Belle Vernon Area, Burrell, Mount Pleasant Area, Southmoreland, and Yough have all punched their tickets to the postseason. The Leopards are tied for second place in Section 1 with a record of 7-3-0. In Section 2, the Buccaneers reside in second place with a mark of 6-2-0. In Section 4, the Vikings top the standings at 8-0-0, while the 5-3-0 Scotties are in third, and the Cougars hold the fourth spot at 4-4-0. The playoffs will commence on Oct. 21.
Panthers, Vikings highlight girls tennis brackets
The WPIAL girls tennis team playoffs commence this week, and Franklin Regional and Mount Pleasant Area headline the Westmoreland County representatives. In the Class 3A field, the Panthers are seeded sixth and host No. 11 Peters Township today at 3 p.m. At the same time, No. 9 Penn-Trafford travels to play eighth-seeded Pine-Richland, No. 10 Greater Latrobe visits seven seed North Allegheny, and No. 15 Norwin hits the road against second-seeded Shady Side Academy. The winners advance to the quarterfinals on Wednesday. Meanwhile in Class 2A, the Vikings garnered the seventh seed and will host No. 10 Indiana Area Tuesday at 3 p.m. Simultaneously, No. 11 Derry Area will travel to face sixth seed Beaver Area, while No. 12 Greensburg Central Catholic will play against fifth-seeded Oakland Catholic at the Schenley Oval. The quarterfinals will occur on Thursday.
Griffins’ Hall reaches 800-win milestone
Seton Hill University women’s volleyball coach Rick Hall reached a remarkable milestone last Tuesday, as he captured his 800th win when the Griffins swept Slippery Rock University. Hall, in his 40th season guiding the program, improved his career mark to 800-434. In the triumph against the Rock, the Griffins won 26-24, 25-13, and 25-16. Paige Cole paced SHU with a dozen kills, while Catie Flohr notched 11 kills and eight blocks. The Griffins, who also won via straight sets at California University of Pennsylvania last Friday, are 13-2 overall, including 3-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).
SVC announces latest Athletic HOF class
Saint Vincent College unveiled its Class of 2024 Athletics Hall of Fame inductees last week, as seven standouts will be enshrined later this month. The athletes include: Victor O’Korn (Class of 1974 – wrestling); Ron Spinosi (79 – men’s basketball); Shelley Muto (04 – women’s soccer); Christopher “Kip” Watkins (05 – baseball); Jenna Moon (07 – women’s lacrosse); Dillon Stith (14 – men’s basketball); and Chansler Poole (14 – men’s cross country/track and field). They will be inducted on Oct. 26 and recognized during the Bearcats football game against Carnegie Mellon University.
