Buccaneers edge Golden Lions in gridiron shootout

Burrell outlasted Greensburg Salem 42-39 in a Westmoreland County football slugfest on Friday. Antonio Perkins posted 19 carries for 155 yards three scores, and he went 7-of-17 through the air for 143 yards and another two touchdowns, along with an interception, for the host Buccaneers. His featured target was Fabian Wilson, who had four catches for 114 yards and two TDs. Trey Coury also scored a touchdown for Burrell. In the setback for the Golden Lions, Brody Chismar had another stellar showing, as he hit on 20-of-37 throws for 360 yards and three scores and two picks, while he rushed 21 times for 125 yards and a trio of touchdowns. Brandt Sandstrom posted six catches for 155 yards for GS. As a result, the Buccaneers improved to 3-0 on the campaign, and they will face a stiff nonconference test at Belle Vernon Area on Friday. The Golden Lions, meanwhile, dipped to 0-3 and will begin Class 3A Interstate Conference play this week with a home matchup against Southmoreland.

Panthers boys soccer notches win against Wildcats

Franklin Regional boys soccer continued its recent surge, as the Panthers scored a pair of wins last week, including a 3-0 triumph against Greater Latrobe. In that home section clash against the Wildcats on Thursday, Aiden Alexander netted a pair of goals in the second half, while Ethan Falvo contributed two assists. Luca Aguilera opened the scoring for FR in the 16th minute, and Andrew Acosta also notched an assist in the victory. Combined with a 1-0 win at Gateway last Tuesday, Franklin Regional sits at 4-1-0, including 3-0-0 in Class 3A Section 1. The Wildcats, conversely, dipped to 0-4-0 following that setback and a subsequent 5-1 loss at Mount Pleasant Area on Saturday.

Yough girls continue run of dominance

Four games into the campaign, Yough girls soccer has overwhelmed the competition. Yough is 4-0-0, including 3-0-0 in Class 2A Section 4, and boasts a scoring differential of 22-1. Last week, the Cougars claimed a 4-0 win at West Mifflin Area to stay perfect. In that victory on Wednesday, Autumn Jurcevich tallied two goals, while Leah Slavick and Daisy Miller also found the back of the net. The Cougars are the lone Westmoreland County girls team that has won all of their matches to this point.

Stein steps away from Jeannette softball

Tubby Stein, who led Jeannette softball to four consecutive playoff appearances, stepped down as head coach last week. During his five-year tenure with the Jayhawks, he achieved a mark of 51-35. That record included going 11-4 overall in the spring, as the Jayhawks went 6-2 in Class 1A Section 3, and then defeated Bishop Canevin in the playoffs before falling to Union in the WPIAL quarterfinals. Stein’s daughter, Grace, is beginning her college softball career this season at the University of Pitt-Greensburg. Stein’s wife and assistant coach, Dody, also stepped down from her position.

Griffins FB secures first win

Seton Hill University football secured its first victory of the 2026 campaign on Saturday, as the Griffins prevailed 20-10 at Lackawanna College. The Griffins scored the final 13 points of the contest, including a 39-yard TD run by Demetri Whitehead in the fourth that sealed the win for SHU. Ryan Keith also scored for SHU, as he caught three passes for 54 yards, while Boden St. Marie went 9-of-19 for 107 yards, with one TD and one pick. Keith Bourque paced the Griffins’ defense with 11 tackles, while Lucas Simone registered nine tackles and 1.5 sacks. Rayyan Bataineh also booted a pair of field goals spanning 49 and 42 yards for the Griffs. Seton Hill is idle this week before opening PSAC West action.

On Tuesday, a pair of Westmoreland County boys soccer teams seek their first win, as Greater Latrobe welcomes Greensburg Salem at 7:30 p.m. On Wednesday, Westmoreland on the Gridiron has the latest on the Westmoreland County football scene, beginning at 7 p.m., while Penn-Trafford girls soccer hosts Kiski Area in a Class 3A Section 4 battle at 7:30 p.m. On Friday, high school football takes center stage, highlighted by a pair of lid lifters in the Class 3A Interstate Conference, with Mount Pleasant Area hosting Derry Area and Greensburg Salem welcoming Southmoreland, both with kickoffs at 7 p.m., while homestanding Penn-Trafford faces Franklin Regional in a Class 5A Big East Conference clash that kicks off at 7:30 p.m.
