The WPIAL released the boys and girls basketball playoff brackets on Monday, and a trio of Westmoreland County teams garnered top seeds. Belle Vernon Area and Greensburg Central Catholic claimed No. 1 seeds on the boys side, while defending champion Norwin received the No. 1 seed on the girls side. Postseason play begins on Thursday, and culminates in three days of championships at the Petersen Events Center from Feb. 27 to March 1.
On the boys side, Norwin qualified for the postseason in Class 6A. The Knights (10-11, 6-8), who finished fifth in Section 2, garnered the No. 11 seed, and will play at sixth-seeded Mount Lebanon on Monday at 7:00 p.m.
In Class 5A, Kiski Area, Greater Latrobe, Penn-Trafford, and Franklin Regional all qualified. The Cavaliers (15-6, 11-1) won Section 2, earning the eight seed. As a result, they will host the Wildcats (18-4, 10-4), who finished as runners-up in Section 1, next Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Warriors (13-9, 8-6) placed fourth in Section 1, and as a result, they were seeded No. 15, pitting them against homestanding and second-seeded Baldwin next Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Panthers (11-11, 6-8) came in fifth in Section 1, and they received the No. 16 seed. As a result, FR will host No. 17 Indiana Area Thursday at 7 p.m. in a preliminary-round matchup.
In Class 4A, Belle Vernon Area and Derry Area made the cut. The Leopards (18-4, 11-1) garnered a bye as the winners of Section 3. As a result, they will host the winner of No. 8 Elizabeth Forward and ninth-seeded Highlands next Wednesday. The Trojans (12-9, 8-4) were seeded No. 11, placing them on the road against six seed Central Valley on Friday.
Southmoreland and Ligonier Valley each made the playoffs in Class 3A. The Scotties (17-5, 10-0) reigned supreme in Section 4, resulting in the No. 6 seed. Consequently, Southmoreland will welcome No. 11 Carlynton next Tuesday at 7 p.m. Additionally, the Rams (13-8, 7-3), who tied for second in Section 4, received the No. 12 seed, pitting them on the road at fifth-seeded Keystone Oaks next Tuesday at 8 p.m.
In Class 2A, Greensburg Central Catholic and Jeannette each earned their spots. The Centurions (20-2, 14-0) won Section 1 and received the top seed, as they await the winner of No. 16 Laurel and No. 17 Eden Christian Academy. GCC will host whichever team advances on Monday at 7 p.m. The Jayhawks (19-2, 12-2) finished in second place from Section 1, garnering the No. 3 seed. Thus, Jeannette will host the winner of No. 14 West Greene and No. 19 Brentwood on Monday at 7 p.m.
Lastly, Monessen is the lone Westmoreland County team in the Class 1A field. The Greyhounds (13-9, 5-5), who tied for third place in Section 2, garnered the sixth seed and will play against No. 3 Nazareth Prep at Sewickley Academy High School next Wednesday.
On the girls slate, defending champion Norwin qualified. The Knights (13-7, 9-1) captured the Section 2 title, and thus received the top seed. They will host No. 8 North Allegheny next Friday.
In Class 5A, Penn-Trafford, Franklin Regional, Graeter Latrobe, and Greensburg Salem all made the field. The Warriors (22-0, 12-0) went undefeated overall and claimed the Section 2 crown. Seeded third, PT will host No. 14 Plum on Friday at 7 p.m. The Panthers (15-6, 11-1) tied atop Section 1, and garnered the fourth seed. As a result, FR will welcome No. 12 Bethel Park Friday at 7 p.m. The Wildcats (11-10, 7-5) placed third in Section 2, receiving the No. 11 seed. Thus, GL will trek to face sixth-seeded Thomas Jefferson Friday at 7 p.m. The Golden Lions (13-9, 6-6) placed fourth from Section 2, receiving the No. 16 seed and a matchup at top-seeded South Fayette on Friday at 7 p.m.
Belle Vernon Area, Burrell, Mount Pleasant Area, and Yough all made the cut in Class 4A. The Leopards (11-11, 8-6) came in fourth from Section 3, yielding the No 10 seed and a road clash at seventh-seeded Central Valley Monday at 7 p.m. The Buccaneers (13-9, 8-6) finished fourth from Section 1. Consequently, Burrell garnered the No. 11 seed, traveling to play six seed South Park Monday at 7 p.m. The Vikings (6-15, 5-9) tied for fifth place in Section 3, receiving the No. 14 seed. Thus, they will play homestanding No. 3 North Catholic Monday at 7 p.m. The Cougars (11-11, 5-9), who also tied for fifth out of Section 3, were seeded No. 16. As a result, Yough hosts No. 17 Highlands Thursday at 7 p.m. in a preliminary-round clash.
In Class 3A, reigning WPIAL champion Greensburg Central Catholic and Ligonier Valley are in the field. The Centurions (17-5, 12-2) finished as runners-up in Section 2, and they garnered the second seed, creating a home matchup against No. 15 Brownsville Area on Friday at 7 p.m. GCC captured the WPIAL Class 2A crown last campaign. The Rams (7-14, 5-9) tied for fifth place in Section 2. As a result, they received the No. 13 seed, creating a matchup at No. 4 Keystone Oaks on Friday at 6 p.m.
