Westmoreland County boys basketball section results from Friday February 12th 2021:
Penn-Trafford 53 Norwin 50 - WATCH BROADCAST
>> Penn-Trafford held off a late comeback attempt by Norwin to capture a 53-50 Section 3-6A win against rival Norwin. The Warriors were ahead by 14 points, 41-27, midway through the third quarter. But over the next 10 minutes, the Knights went on a 21-7 run and tied the game, 48-48, on a pair of free throws by Adam Bilinsky with 1:36 on the clock. On the next Penn-Trafford posession, Josh Kapcin connected on a lay up to give P-T a 50-48 lead in what became the game-winning shot. With just 7.6 seconds left, Kapcin hit one-of-two free throws which gave Norwin a chance but the Knights never got off a shot before the buzzer. Kapcin finished with 20 points while Ben Myers put in 13 for Penn-Trafford (8-5, 4-4). Bilinsky paced the Knights with 20 points. Jayden Walker chipped in 12 and Nick Fleming added 11 for Norwin (5-9, 2-7).
Hempfield 82 Greensburg Salem 38
>> Hempfield won its fourth straight game picking up an 82-38 Section 3-6A victory at Greensburg Salem. The Spartans outscored the Golden Lions in every quarter and led 44-25 at halftime. Joe Fiedor scored a game-high 14 points for Hempfield (9-3, 7-2) while Mike Hosni chipped in 11. Ben Thomas and Cade Cavanaugh scored 13 and 11 points respectively for Greensburg Salem (0-7, 0-5).
Gateway 61 Franklin Regional 28
>> Franklin Regional went ice cold for a long stretch in the second half and was stunned by Gateway 61-28 in a Section 3-5A contest. The Panthers trailed at halftime by just four points, 19-15, but by the end of the third quarter the Gators were in front 45-23. Gateway closed it out with a 16-5 run in the fourth. Kadyn Hannah's 16 points paced Franklin Regional (5-3, 5-1). Jeffrey Downs ended with 10 points. The Panthers had defeated Gateway earlier in the season 63-54.
Latrobe 83 Kiski Area 49 - WATCH BROADCAST
>> Latrobe scored at least 20 points in each quarter in an 83-49 lopsided victory over Kiski Area in Section 3-5A action. The Wildcats held leads of 21-8 after one and 41-25 at the halftime break. Frank Newill poured in a game-high 25 points for Latrobe (5-5, 5-3). Ryan and Chase Sickenberger also hit double-digits with 13 points each while Landon Butler scored 12. Lebryn Smith tallied 12 points for the Cavaliers (3-11, 1-8).
Yough 64 Southmoreland 30
>> Yough snapped a five-game losing skid in a 64-30 triumph over Southmoreland in a Section 3-4A match up. Gamal Marballie racked up a game-best 22 points for the Cougars (3-8, 2-5) while teammate Terek Crosby tallied 20. Tyler Zerone finished with 10. Ty Keefer's 12 points led the Scotties (1-13, 0-11) with Isaac Trout coming in with 10.
Mt. Pleasant 54 Uniontown 48
>> Mt. Pleasant won its second straight game downing Uniontown 54-48 to earn a Section 3-4A victory. The Vikings fell behind 24-21 at halftime but outscored the Red Raiders 33-24 the rest of the way. Lucas Toohey put up 13 points to lead Mt. Pleasant (5-7, 4-4) which sits in fourth place in the section. Jonas King and Nate Kubasky added 11 points for the Vikings.
Jeannette 54 Clairton 44
>> Four players finished in double figures for Jeannette as the Jayhawks took down Clairton 54-44 in a Section 3-2A showdown. The Jayhawks got off to a quick start, ahead 15-6 after one and held off the Bears in the second half. Toby Kline and Jimmy Sanders were the leading scorers for Jeannette (8-3, 5-2) tallying 11 points each. Keith Rockmore and Ryan Kimmel each tossed in 10. The Jayhawks are in second place in the section, one game behind first place Greensburg Central Catholic.
