Westmoreland County boys basketball section results from January 19th 2021:
Norwin 66 Penn-Trafford 59
>> Michael Fleming lit up the scoreboard, pouring in 27 points to lead Norwin to an important 66-59 Section 3-6A victory at rival Penn-Trafford. The Knights trailed by as many as 10 points in the second quarter but took the lead early in the third quarter and went up by double figures in the fourth. Fleming connected on five 3-pointers in the contest plus went 8-for-8 from the foul line in the fourth quarter in which the Knights scored 23 points. Kaleb Pryor, a transfer from Gateway, put in 13 points for Norwin (3-2, 1-2) which won its first section game of the season. Ty Bilinsky played in his first game of the year after missing time due to health issues. Josh Kapcin also had a big night scoring 20 points for the Warriors (3-2, 1-2). Nick Crum finished with 14 points for P-T.
Franklin Regional 63 Gateway 54 WATCH BROADCAST
>> Franklin Regional built on a seven-point halftime lead to jump ahead 51-37 late in the third quarter and went on to defeat Gateway 63-54 in a home Section 3-5A match up. The Gators kept pushing in the fourth quarter going on a 15-7 run to pull within 57-52 with 1:25 remaining. But Luke Kimmich scored six straight points on four free throws plus a steal and a lay up to close out the game for the Panthers. Kimmich finished with a game-high 27 points while teammate Kadyn Hannah tallied 20 points for Franklin Regional (3-1, 3-0).
Latrobe 64 Kiski Area 58 WATCH BROADCAST
>> Latrobe went out to a big lead then held off Kiski Area in the second half to secure a 64-58 win in Section 3-5A play. The Wildcats outscored the Cavaliers 22-9 in the second quarter to go into halftime ahead 40-20 but Kiski Area cut it to 52-44 after three. Latrobe was able to keep Kiski Area at bay in the fourth quarter to walk away with the road win. Ryan Sickenberger's 22 points topped the Wilcats (2-3, 2-2). Drew Clair (13), Landon Butler (11) and Frank Newill (10) also finished in double figures. James Pearson tossed in a game-high 23 points for the Cavaliers (1-4, 1-2).
Yough 64 Southmoreland 26
>> Yough sprinted out to a 19-4 advantage after the first quarter and cruised to a 64-26 victory in Section 3-4A. Three players finished in double-figures for the Cougars with Christian Park's 19 points leading the way. Terek Crosby ended with 18 points and Gamal Marballie put in 13 for Yough (2-3, 1-2). Zach Cernuto scored 10 points to lead the Scotties (0-4, 0-3).
Uniontown 55 Mt. Pleasant 47
>> Uniontown went on an 18-11 run in the fourth quarter to pull away from Mt. Pleasant and earn a 55-47 Section 3-4A victory. The Vikings were down 17-9 after the first quarter but worked to cut the Red Raiders lead to just 37-36 after the third quarter. Uniontown found traction in the fourth quarter to put the game on ice. Nathan Kubasky ended with 13 points to pace the Vikings (2-3, 2-1). Tyler Salvatore added 12 points.
Belle Vernon 59 Elizabeth Forward 47
>> Devin Whitlock's 21 points guided Belle Vernon to a 59-47 Section 3-4A triumph over Elizabeth Forward. Daniel Gordon and Jake Haney also finished in double-figures with 19 and 12 points respectively for the Leopards (2-1, 2-0).
Jeannette 37 Clairton 22
>> It wasn't pretty but Jeannette was able to secure a low-scoring 37-22 win over Clairton at home in Section 3-2A action. The highest scoring quarter came in the third as the Jayhawks held a 15-12 edge in points. The Bears did not score at all in the fourth quarter. Keith Rockmore's 15 points lead Jeannette (2-1, 2-1). Hunter Schmidt added 10 for Jeannette.
Greensburg Central Catholic 72 Serra Catholic 57
>> Greensburg Central Catholic used a huge fourth quarter to down Serra Catholic 72-57 in Section 3-2A play. The game was tied at 54-54 after three quarters but the Centurions outscored the Eagles 18-3 in the fourth to pull away. Christian McGowan tallied a game-best 24 points for GCC (3-1, 3-1). Dylan Sebek scored 17 points.
