Westmoreland County boys basketball section results from Friday January 31st 2020:
BOYS
Jeannette 64 Chartiers-Houston 58 (2OT)
>> It took extra time but Jeannette was able to escape an upset bid, beating Chartiers-Houston 64-58 in double-overtime in a Section 2-2A game. Jackson Pruitt scored 16 points to pace the first place Jayhawks (13-7, 9-1). Toby Cline and Keith Rockmore each came in with 14 points.
Latrobe 64 Norwin 55
>> Latrobe opened a 24-13 lead after the first quarter and went on to score a 64-55 Section 3-6A victory over Norwin at home. A total of six players reached double-figures in the game. Leading the Wildcats (6-14, 3-6) were Michael Noonan who scored 17 points, Chase Sickenberger put in 13 and Ryan Sickenberger ended with 12. Joshua Williams racked up a game-high 20 points for the Knights (12-7, 3-6). Adam Bilinsky added 12 points and Conor McCutcheon came in with 10. Latrobe and Norwin are now tied with Connellsville for fourth place in the section.
Hempfield 61 Connellsville 36
>> Hempfield has had Connellsville's number this year. The Spartans drilled the Falcons in the first meeting between the teams, 65-35, and it happened again on Friday as Hempfield used a big second half to win the game 61-36 in Section 3-6A action. The Spartans held a 29-22 lead at halftime and then went on to outscore Connellsville 32-14 in the second half. Christian Zilli's 23 points were a game-high for Hempfield (10-9, 5-4). Teammates Michael Hosni and Marcus McCarthy finished with 16 and 13 points respectively. The Spartans now hold sole possession of second place.
Fox Chapel 71 Penn-Trafford 57 WATCH BROADCAST
>> Fox Chapel flexed its muscles on Friday, outscoring Penn-Trafford in every quarter to take the Section 3-6A contest 71-57. The Warriors trailed 37-24 early in the second half but went on a quick 11-2 spurt to get the score to 39-35 with under five minutes left in the third. But the Foxes answered with an 13-4 run to close out the quarter. Zach Rocco continued his terrific senior season for Penn-Trafford (11-8, 4-5) in which he racked up 27 points, a game-high. Josh Kapcin added 11. The Warriors are now in sole possession of third place.
Gateway 61 Grensburg Salem 50
>> Greensburg Salem went ahead 20-16 after the first quarter but was outscored by Gateway the rest of the way in a 61-50 loss in Section 1-5A. Dante Parsons collected 22 points to pace the Golden Lions (3-16, 0-11). R.J. Stevenson chipped in 10.
Franklin Regional 68 Indiana 53
>> Franklin Regional got off to a hot start and downed Indiana at home 68-53 in a Section 3-5A contest. The Panthers outscored the Indians 23-4 in the first quarter and it was too much for Indiana to overcome. Logan Summerhill tossed in 19 points to lead Franklin Regional (9-11, 6-6). Luke Kimmich put in 14. The Panthers are now in a three-way tie for fourth place with Kiski Area and Plum.
Yough 52 Freeport 44
>> Gamal Marballie scored 20 points to lead Yough to a 52-44 Section 1-4A victory over Freeport. It's the first section win for the Cougars who went on an 11-6 ru in the third quarter to pull away from the Yellowjackets.
Knoch 92 Derry Area 52
>> Derry trailed by only 10 points at halftime but Knoch was able to pull away in the second half for a 92-52 victory against the Trojans in a Section 1-4A contest.. Aidan Bushey put in 17 points to lead Derry (7-12, 4-5) while Tanner Nicely scored 16.
Highlands 70 Mt. Pleasant 43
>> Mt. Pleasant allowed Highlands to score 26 points in the first quarter and was unable to dig out of the early hole in a 70-43 Section 1-4A loss at home. Luke Brandner' 17 points topped the Vikings (11-9, 5-4). Jake Johnson collected 14 points.
Greensburg Central Catholic 61 Propel Andrew Street 49
>> Christian McGowan poured in 25 points to guide Greensburg Central Catholic to a 61-49 Section 3-1A victory at Propel Andrew Street. The Centurions (15-4, 11-1) trailed 13-12 after the first quarter but outscored Propel in every quarter the remainder of the game. In addition to McGowan, Brevan Williams scored 14 points.
