Westmoreland County boys basketball section results from Tuesday January 28th 2020:
BOYS
Hempfield 60 Penn-Trafford 52 WATCH BROADCAST
>> Hempfield shut out Penn-Trafford in a huge second quarter to secure a 60-52 Section 3-6A victory at Spartans Field House. The Warriors led 15-12 after the first quarter but Hempfield outscored P-T 17-0 in the second quarter. Penn-Trafford rallied in a bit in the fourth quarter but it was too late. Four players finished in double-figures for the Spartans with Marcus McCarthy leading the way finishing with 18 points. Nick Suchko, Mike Gaffney and Michael Hosni each added 10 points for the Spartans (9-9, 4-4). Zach Rocco poured in a game-high 26 points for the Warriors (11-7, 4-4). Josh Kapcin scored 10. The two teams are now tied for third place in the section.
Fox Chapel 47 Norwin 38
>> Norwin couldn't solve Fox Chapel's stingy defense in a 47-38 setback to the first place Foxes in Section 3-6A play. The Knights were down just 12-11 through the first eight minutes but Fox Chapel extended the lead to 21-13 at halftime. Norwin's Nick Fleming connected on a three-pointer to make it 43-36 with over two minutes remaining in the game but that's the closest the Knights would get. Ty Bilinsky racked up a game-best 21 points for Norwin (11-6, 3-5). Jayden Walker tossed in 12.
Connellsville 75 Latrobe 74
>> Kade Musgrove's three-pointer at the buzzer lifted Connellsville to a 75-74 victory at Latrobe in a Section 3-6A match up. Michael Noonan's 27 points paced the Wildcats (5-14, 2-6). Ryan Sickenberger tallied 18 points while Landon Butler scored 14. Josh Maher racked up a game-high 32 points for the Falcons (7-11, 3-5).
Penn Hills 69 Greensburg Salem 66
>> Dante Parsons turned in another terrific performance but it wasn't quite enough as Greensburg Salem fell to Penn Hills 69-66 in a Section 1-5A contest. Jeff Mankins connected on what would of been a game-tying three-pointer but time expired before he released the shot. In addition to Parsons, who had five 3-pointers, Mankins totaled 12 points for the Golden Lions (3-15, 0-10).
Plum 55 Franklin Regional 51
>> Franklin Regional fell in a deep hole after the first quarter and despite a large rally the Panthers suffered a 55-51 loss at Plum in Section 3-5A action. Franklin Regional trailed 16-1 after one but were able to trim the lead all the way down to 37-36 after three. But the Mustangs outscored FR 19-15 in the fourth quarter to secure the win. Luke Kimmich collected 14 points to lead the Panthers (8-11, 5-6) while Logan Summerhill put in 13.
Mt. Pleasant 47 Freeport 41
>> Jake Johnson scored 20 points to help lead Mt. Pleasant to a 47-41 Section 1-4A victory over Freeport. The Vikings build up a 28-20 lead at halftime. In addition to Johnson, Luke Brandner had 13 points for Mt. Pleasant (11-8, 5-3) which clinched a playoff berth for the first time since 2015-16.
Derry Area 50 Yough 37
>> Derry pulled away from Yough in the fourth quarter to earn a 50-37 victory in a Section 1-4A match up. With Trojans ahead 37-35 going into the fourth quarter, Derry ended the game on a 13-2 run to put the game away. Ryan Bushey's 13 points topped the Trojans (7-11, 4-4) while Sam Jones collected 11. Gamal Marballie tallied 13 points for the Cougars (5-13, 0-8). With the win, Derry qualifies for the WPIAL playoffs in back-to-back seasons for the first time in 61 years.
Charleroi 57 Southmoreland 47
>> Southmoreland had three players finish in double-figures but it wasn't enough as Charleroi handed the Scotties a 57-47 loss in Section 4-3A play. The Cougars outscored Southmoeland 48-38 over the final three quarters. Brandon Peterson tallied 15 points to pace the Scotties (8-11, 5-4) while Zach Cernuto scored 13 points and Riley Comforti put in 12.
Jeannette 65 Carmichaels 50
>> Jeannette built up a 17-11 lead after the first quarter and a 37-25 advantage at halftime and cruised to a 65-50 Section 2-2A victory over Carmichaels. Leading the Jayhawks (12-7, 8-1) were Jackson Pruitt who scored a game-high 19 points. Antwon Good added 15 and Keith Rockmore tossed in 10.
Greensburg Central Catholic 66 Leechburg 56 WATCH BROADCAST
>> Greensburg Central Catholic built up a substantial 20-11 first quarter lead and went on to a 66-56 Section 3-1A win over Leechburg. Brevan Williams tallied 17 points to lead the Centurions (14-4, 10-1) and Christian McGowan dropped in 13. GCC and Imani Christian are now tied atop the section with 10-1 records. The teams will face each other next Tuesday at Central.
GIRLS
North Allegheny 60 Norwin 42
>> Norwin won the first meeting between the teams but this time around North Allegheny built up an early lead and was ahead 31-16 at halftime and went on to the Section 1-6A win. Jayla Wehner scored 14 points for the Knights (14-3, 10-1) who are now tied for first place with the Tigers.
Penn-Trafford 62 Hempfield 54
>> Bella Long scored 19 points to lead Penn-Trafford to a 62-54 win over Hempfield in non-section play. Sarah Liberatore put in a game-high 21 points for the Spartans.
