Westmoreland County boys basketball section results from Tuesday January 21st 2020:
BOYS
Franklin Regional 43 Armstrong 42
>> Franklin Regional connected on a late free throw and topped Armstrong 43-42 in a Section 3-5A contest. Luke Kimmich put in nine points to lead the Panthers (8-9, 5-4) who won their fourth straight game.
Norwin 53 Hempfield 46 WATCH BROADCAST
>> Hempfield led for nearly the entire game but Adam Bilinsky's lay up with just under two minutes left put Norwin ahead 46-44 and it would never relinquish the lead in a 53-46 win in Section 3-6A. The Knights, who trailed 26-18 at halftime, finished the contest on a 9-2 run. Norwin (10-4, 2-4) was led by Ty Bilinsky and Jayden Walker who both scored 18 points. Mike Hosni also finished with 18 points for the Spartans (8-8, 3-3) while Christian Zilli finished with 13. Hempfield currently sits in third place in the section, one game behind second place Penn-Trafford while Norwin is now one game behind Hempfield.
Fox Chapel 64 Latrobe 39
>> The game was tied at 14-14 after the first quarter but Fox Chapel dominated the rest of the way in a 64-39 win at Latrobe in Section 3-6A play. The Foxes had a 27-19 lead at halftime and increased the advantage to 48-31 after three. Michael Noonan and Ryan Sickenberger each scored 10 points for the Wildcats (4-13, 1-5).
Penn-Trafford 68 Connellsville 52
>> Penn-Trafford used a big fourth quarter to pull away from Connellsville and secure a Section 3-6A victory by a final of 68-52. The Warriors closed the game with an 18-8 run. Josh Kapcin tallied 18 points to lead Penn-Trafford (10-5, 4-2). Zach Rocco came in with 17 points and Ben Myers scored 12.
McKeesport 50 Greensburg Salem 49
>> Dante Parsons poured in 29 points for Greensburg Salem but it wasn't enough as McKeesport came back to defeat the Golden Lions 50-49 in a Section 1-5A battle. Greensburg Salem built a 27-17 lead at the halftime break after going on a 15-2 run in the second quarter but the Tigers clawed back to win in the second half. The Golden Lions record falls to 2-13, 0-8.
Derry Area 56 Freeport 40
>> Aidan and Ryan Bushey combined to score 35 points to lift Derry to a 56-40 Section 1-4A victory at Freeport. The Trojans took control of the game when they outscored the Yellowjackets 15-4 in the third quarter. Aidan Bushey finished with 18 points and five rebounds while Ryan Bushey scored 17 points and dished out five assists. Sam Jones added nine points for Derry (6-9, 3-3).
Highlands 79 Yough 31
>> Highlands sprinted out to a 23-6 lead through the first eight minutes and went on to defeat Yough 79-31 in Section 1-4A. Gamal Marballie scored 12 points to lead the Cougars (5-11, 0-6).
Knoch 69 Mt. Pleasant 42
>> Mt. Pleasant was outscored in every quarter by first place Knoch in a 69-42 loss in Section 1-4A. Luke Brandner's 18 points topped the Vikings (9-7, 3-3). Mt. Pleasant and Derry are now tied for third place in the section.
Southmoreland 73 Beth-Center 66
>> Southmoreland won its fifth straight game defeating Beth-Center 73-66 in a Section 4-3A match up. The Scotties got a huge night from Riley Comforti who poured in a game-high 28 points. Brandon Peterson added 19 points and Zach Cernuto tallied 13 for Southmoreland (7-10, 4-3).
Greensburg Central Catholic 65 Propel Montour 12
>> Greensburg Central Catholic cruised to a 65-12 Section 3-1A victory over Propel Montour. Ryan Appleby scored 11 points and Ben LaCarte added 10 for the Centurions (11-4, 8-1).
