Westmoreland County boys basketball section results from Tuesday, January 15th 2020:
BOYS
Jeannette 75 Serra Catholic 47
>> Serra Catholic held a scoring edge in the first quarter but Jeannette turned up the heat the rest of the way as the Jayhawks defeated the Eagles 75-47 in Section 2-2A play. Serra Catholic was ahead 15-10 through the first eight minutes but Jeannette turned the tables, outscoring the Eagles 21-8 in the second quarter, 26-19 in the third and 18-5 in the fourth. Anton Good poured in 24 points to lead the Jayhawks (8-6, 5-1). Jackson Pruitt chipped in 16 points.
Penn-Trafford 64 Norwin 38 WATCH BROADCAST
>> Zach Rocco scored 27 points and Penn-Trafford used a stifling defense to defeat Norwin 63-38 in a Section 3-6A contest in Harrison City. The Warriors held a 31-22 lead at halftime then outscored the Knights 13-4 in the third quarter to pull away. In addition to Rocco, Nick Crum put in 12 points for the Warriors (9-4, 3-2). Jayden Walker tallied 16 points and was the lone player in double figures for Norwin (9-4, 1-4).
Hempfield 68 Latrobe 66
>> For the first time since 2014, Hempfield captured a victory at Latrobe hitting key free throws down the stretch to take the Section 3-6A match up 68-66. With the game tied at 65-65, Marcus McCarthy was fouled with 36.6 seconds remaining and hit one of two free throws to give the Spartans the lead. After the Wildcats missed a layup, McCarthy grabbed the rebound, drew a foul, and hit two additional free throws to put the game away. Michael Noonan, who committed that last foul, poured in a game-high 26 points for Latrobe (3-11, 1-4). Ryan Sickenberger and Landon Butler each posted 11 points and Chase Sickenburger tallied 10. McCarthy and Christian Zilli each scored 15 points to pace Hempfield (7-7, 3-2).
Franklin Regional 71 Kiski Area 54
>> Franklin Regional sprinted out to a huge 25-7 lead after the first quarter and went on to defeat Kiski Area 71-54 in a Section 3-5A game. Logan Summerhill's 23 points was a game-high for the Panthers (6-9, 3-4). Johnny O'Toole added 13 points and Caden Smith tossed in 11 for FR.
Highlands 81 Derry Area 59
>> Derry dropped its second straight section 1-4A game losing to second place Highlands 81-59 at home. Aidan Bushey led the Trojans with 16 points while Tanner Nicely added 14. Tyson Webb chipped in 10 points for Derry (4-9, 2-3).
Mt. Pleasant 51 Yough 46
>> Gamal Marballie poured in 29 points for Yough but it wasn't enough as Mt. Pleasant hung on to defeat the Cougars 51-46 in Section 1-4A action. The Vikings stormed out to a 21-11 lead on their own floor. Yough was able to stay within striking distance but could never take the lead. Lucas Toohey had 15 points to pace Mt. Pleasant (8-6, 3-2). In addition to Marballie, Josh O'Bradovich finished with 10 for the Cougars (5-10, 0-5).
Southmoreland 56 Frazier 49
>> Southmoreland used a big fourth quarter to down Frazier 56-49 in Section 4-3A action. The Scotties trailed 40-37 heading into the final period but went on a 19-9 run to win the game. Riley Comforti poured in a game-high 31 points for Southmoreland (4-10, 3-3). Brandon Peterson finished with 12.
