BOYS
Norwin 69 Hempfield 57 WATCH BROADCAST
>> Norwin used a big first quarter and then held off Hempfield to take the Section 3-6A opener from the Spartans 69-57. The Knights used a quick start in which they built a 22-9 advantage after one. The Spartans (4-3, 0-1) outscored them 48-47 over the remaining three quarters but it wasn't enough to make up for the slow start. Norwin was ahead 32-25 at halftime and Hempfield cut it to 50-44 in the fourth quarter. But an intentional foul callled on the Spartans Jules Nicholls with 3:58 left resulted in the Knights going back up by 11 at 55-44 and the game's outcome was decided. Hempfield's Reed Hipps dropped in 25 points to lead all scorers. Drew Coletta chipped in with 10. Norwin (5-1, 1-0) was led by Jayden Walker who score 17 points followed by Gianni Rizzo's 16 and Ty Bilinsky's 14 points.
Latrobe 66 Fox Chapel 62
>> Latrobe used a big run in the second half to pull away from Fox Chapel and earn a 66-62 thilling victory in both teams Section 3-6A opener. The Wildcats led 24-20 at halftime but the Foxes had the game tied at 43-43 late in the third quarter. That's when Latrobe went on a 13-0 run to jump back in front 53-40 with just 5:57 left in the game. Fox Chapel came storming back, however, going on a 13-2 spurt of its own to make it 55-53 with 2:21 remaining. But the Foxes missed a couple free throws and Reed Fenton and Bryce Butler made key foul shots to put the game away. Butler racked up 22 points to lead the Wildcats (6-1, 1-0). Fenton, who was in foul trouble, finished with 18 points and Ryan Sickenberger tallied 12.
Woodland Hikls 57 Greensburg Salem 51
>> Greensburg Salem used a furious rally in the second half to climb back into the game but couldn't come the entire way back in a 57-51 loss at Woodland Hills in Section 1-5A play. The Golden Lions trailed 13-4 to start the game and 25-11 at halftime. In the second half, Greensburg Salem's offense got on track scoring 21 and 19 points in the third and fourth quarters but couldn't make up the difference. Dante Parsons ended with 14 points for the Golden Lions (3-4, 0-3). Jack Oberdorf tossed in 12 and Ryan Thomas 11.
Knoch 49 Mt. Pleasant 30
>> Mt. Pleasant couldn't overcome a slow start and dropped its Section 1-4A opener at home to Knoch 49-30. The Vikings went down 16-5 after one and even though they outscored the Knights 11-8 in the second quarter they couldn't come back from the beginning of the game. Jacob Johnson's 10 points led the way for Mt. Pleasant (1-6, 0-1).
Freeport 65 Derry Area 59
>> A rough third quarter doomed Derry in its Section 1-4A opener losing at Freeport 65-59. The Trojans led 20-17 through one quarter and 35-33 at halftime but went cold in the third period as they were outscored 18-8 in the frame. After three the Yellowjackets led 51-43. Derry battled back in the fourth but couldn't overcome the deficit. John Kerr tallied a game-high 22 points for the Trojans (4-2, 0-1).
Jeannette 77 Bentworth 34
>> Jeannette reeled off 30 points in the first quarter and didn't leave any doubt in a 77-34 thrashing of Bentworth in Section 2-2A. A.J. Sharp poured in 30 points and Marcus Barnes added 12 for the Jayhawks (4-2, 2-0).
Greensburg Central Catholic 77 Trinity Christian 27
>> Greensburg Central Catholic earned its second Section 3-1A victory of the season defeating Trinity Christian on the road 77-27. The Centurions went out to a 21-8 lead after the first quarter and pushed the advantage to 42-17 by halftime. Joel LoNigro topped GCC with 20 points. Geoff Helm an Jacob Biros scored 14 and 13 points respectively for the Centurions (4-2, 2-1).
Penn-Trafford 60 Barringer (NJ) 59
>> After losing its first game of the Kreul Classic in Coral Springs, Florida on Thursday, Penn-Trafford bounced back with a 60-59 win over Barringer High School in New Jersey Friday afternoon. The Warriors held a comfortable 52-36 lead after three quarters but were outscored 23-8 in the fourth quarter and had to hold on for the victory. Zach Rocco's 17 points paced Penn-Trafford (5-1, 1-0).
GIRLS
Penn Hills 60 Latrobe 48
>> Penn Hills held a 21-10 edge in scoring in the third quarter to down Latrobe 60-48 in Section 3-6A action. Carly Augustine had a team-high 11 points for the Wildcats (3-2, 1-2). Rachel Ridilla added 10 points.
Belle Vernon 43 Mt. Pleasant 23
>> Mt. Pleasant (2-5, 1-2) was outscored 13-2 in the first quarter on the way to a 43-23 loss to Belle Vernon in a Section 3-4A contest. Rachel Wobrak finished with 15 points for the Leopards (3-3, 3-0).
Homer-Center 62 Derry Area 39
>> Destiny Roberts 18 points was not enough as Derry dropped a non-section game at Homer-Center 62-39. The Trojans record now stands at (2-4, 2-1).
Greensburg CC 53 Propel Andrew Street 10
>> Greensburg Central Catholic rolled its way to a 53-10 Section 3-1A victory against Propel Andrew Street. Melina Maietta ended with 14 points to lead the Centurions (5-0, 1-0). Anna Eisaman added 11.
