BASEBALL
Derry Area 16 Yough 6 (6 inn.) LISTEN BROADCAST
>> Derry pounded out 14 hits and took advantage of seven Yough errors in a 16-6 Section 1-4A six inning victory. The Trojans (1-3, 1-2) exploded for six runs in the second inning and tacked on two more in the third to go in front 8-1. The Cougars (1-2, 1-2) fought back and made the score 8-4 after four innings but Derry plated two more runs in the fifth and scored six runs in the sixth to enact the 10-run rule. Conner Watt led DA at the plate going 3-for-5 with three runs scored. Ryan Polinsky, Tristen Grimm and Anthony Oshie all finished with two hits with Oshie driving in three runs. Dom Koch had a pair of hits for Yough and Scott Houseman drove in a pair of runs. Joe Lynch went 5 2/3 innings to earn the win on the mound.
Hempfield 7 Penn-Trafford 3
>> Hempfield rallied by scoring six runs in the sixth inning to upend Penn-Trafford 7-3 in a Section 2-6A battle. The Spartans (4-1, 1-0) held a 1-0 lead after two but the Warriors scored runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to build a 3-1 lead after five. In the sixth, the first four Hempfield batters of the inning reached base including a RBI single by Tyler Wiederstein to make it 3-2. After the next two Hempfield batters struck out, Reed Hipps lined a RBI single into center field to tie the game. A big P-T error scored two more to give the Spartans a 5-3 lead and Isaiah DiAndreth put the icing on the cake with a two-run single and it was 7-3. The Warriors (3-2, 1-1) got a one-out single by Zach Mancz in the top of the seventh but that's all they could manage. Hipps had three hits to pace Hempfield. DiAndreth and Wiederstein each finished with two hits and DiAndreth drove in two. Dom Disso went 3-for-4 for Penn-Trafford. Jake Anderson picked up the win in relief allowing one run on three hits in 3 1/3 innings.
Norwin 5 Plum 4
>> Norwin scored all its runs early and wiggled out of a jam in the seventh inning to earn a 5-4 victory over Plum in Section 2-6A. The Knights tallied four runs in the second inning and added what would become the winning run in the third inning to jump in front 5-1. The Mustangs (5-2, 1-1) scored twice in the fourth and once in the fifth to cut the score to 5-4. They loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh but the Knights threw a runner out at home on a fielders choice and pitcher Vincent Oddo got a fly out to end the game. Nick Zona finished with two hits, including a double, walked and drove in three runs for Norwin.
Franklin Regional 2 Thomas Jefferson 1
>> Palmer Jackson allowed just one run in 6 1/3 innings leading Franklin Regional to a 2-1 win against Thomas Jefferson in a Section 3-5A match up. The Panthers scored both runs in the second inning on RBI singles by Conor Helm and Andrew Muraco and it turned out to be all they needed. Bryce Harper also had two hits for Franklin Regional (4-2, 2-1). Jackson, who struck out five, was forced out of the game when his pitch count hit 100 pitches with one out in the seventh inning. Michael Klingensmith came on to get the final two outs of the game.
Latrobe 12 McKeesport 0
>> Connor Mondock blasted a grand slam to highlight Latrobe's 10-hit attack in a 12-0, 10-run rule victory for the Wildcats in a Scetion 3-5A game. Latrobe scored twice in the first inning, four times in the second and plated five runs in the third before tallying another in the fourth. In addition to the grand slam, Mondock went 3-for-4 plus scored two runs. Ben Rafferty finished with two hits for the Wildcats. Pitchers Jake Bradish and Adam Wolford combined on the shutout.
Knoch 8 Greensburg Salem 5
>> Greensburg Salem tried to rally late but it came up short in an 8-5 loss to Knoch in Section 1-4A action. The Golden Lions found themselves down 6-1 after four innings. They regrouped to score three times in the fifth and cut it to 6-4 but the Knights scored twice in the top of the sixth to put the game out of reach. Jack Oberdorf clubbed a pair of doubles and drove in two for Greensburg Salem (0-3, 0-2). Jon Borbonus and Dajaughn Hertzog both added two hits.
Seton-La Salle 3 Mt. Pleasant 1 (10 inn.)
>> It took 10 innings but Seton-La Salle outlasted Mt. Pleasant 3-1 in a long Section 3-3A battle. The game was scoreless through seven innings before the Rebels scored a run in the top of the eighth inning to go ahead 1-0. The Vikings though answered by tying the game in the bottom of the frame on a run-scoring single by Jared Wagner. The game would advance to the 10th inning and Seton-La Salle scored the winning runs on a two-run single with two outs. Trevor Mason doubled and walked for Mt. Pleasant (0-2, 0-2). Vikings starter Joe Shrum worked 9 1/3 innings allowing just one run on three hits while striking out six.
Greensburg CC 18 Geibel Catholic 1 (3 inn.)
>> Greensburg Central Catholic exploded for 10 runs in the third inning to breeze past Geibel Catholic 18-1 in a Section 2-1A game. Bryce Kurpiel went 3-for-3, including a double, and drove in three runs for the Centurions (3-1, 3-0). Paul Rice had two hits and also brought home three runs. Joel LoNigro allowed an unearned run in three innings and struck out five to pick up the victory for GCC.
Jeannette 16 Mapletown 4
>> Jeannette used a big third inning to down Mapletown 16-4 in Section 2-1A. Jeannette held a 2-0 lead after two but tallied seven runs in the third inning to take a commanding 9-0 advantage. Tre Cunningham and Drake Petrillo each collected two hits and two RBIs for the Jayhawks (4-1, 2-1). Tyler Elliott reached base three times and scored three runs.
