BOYS
Franklin Regional 64 Gateway 46 - LISTEN BROADCAST
>> Franklin Regional kept pace with Highlands for first place in Section 3-5A with a 64-46 victory over Gateway on Senior Night. The Panthers used a big first half to down the Gators leading 14-9 after the first quarter and 35-17 at the halftime break. Jake Rosenberg put in 16 points to top the Panthers (12-4, 6-1) who remain tied with Highlands for the top spot in the section.
Latrobe 68 Norwin 58 - LISTEN BROADCAST
>> Reed Fenton poured in 37 points to help Latrobe stave off Norwin 68-58 in a Section 3-6A match up. The Wildcats held a 23-15 lead after one but the Knights limited Latrobe to just six points in the second quarter and cut their deficit to just 29-27 at halftime. It remained a two-point game after three quarters with the Wildcats ahead 46-44 but Latrobe outscored Norwin 22-14 in the fourth quarter to pull away. Aside from Fenton, Bryce Butler scored 15 points for the Wildcats (12-5, 7-3). The Knights (9-8, 4-6) were led by Josh Ratesic who tallied 23 points. Latrobe remains tied for third place with Fox Chapel one game behind Penn Hills and Woodland Hills.
Plum 56 Penn-Trafford 49
>> Penn-Trafford dropped its fourth straight game losing at home to Plum 56-49 in Section 3-6A play. The Warriors were outscored in three of four quarters including 14-8 in the second quarter. C.J. DiStefano scored 19 points for Penn-Trafford (6-12, 3-7).
Woodland Hills 83 Hempfield 52
>> Hempfield trailed by just two points at the end of the first quarter before Woodland Hills came alive to beat the Spartans 83-52 in a Section 3-6A battle. Hempfield was behind 8-6 after the first eight minutes of the game but the Wolverines exploded to score 25 points in the second quarter, 28 in the third and 22 in the fourth. Marcus McCarthy finished with 13 points to pace the Spartans (5-12, 2-8).
Greensburg Salem 51 Kiski Area 39
>> After a slow start, Greensburg Salem used a big second half to capture a Section 3-5A victory at Kiski Area 51-39. The Golden Lions held a 15-8 advantage at halftime before scoring 36 points over the final two quarters to put the game on ice. Marvel McGowan, the top boys basketball scorer in Westmoreland County, racked up 24 points for Greensburg Salem (10-6, 3-4). G-S is in fourth place in the section, one game behind third place Gateway.
Deer Lakes 68 Mt. Pleasant 35
>> Mt. Pleasant was outscored in every quarter in a 68-35 home loss to Deer Lakes in Section 1-4A play. The Vikings fell behind 34-17 at halftime then were outscored 26-11 in the third quarter. Jake Johnson tossed in 16 points for Mt. Pleasant (3-15, 1-7).
Jeannette 61 Springdale 24
>> Jeannette raced out to an early lead and rolled over Springdale 61-24 in Section 1-2A. The Jayhawks ouscored the Dynamos in every period including 21-7 in the third. Marcus Barnes led all scorers with 13 points for Jeannette (11-2, 6-1). The Jayhawks currently sit a half-game behind first place Serra Catholic which has a 7-1 section record.
Serra Catholic 63 Greensburg Central Catholic 39
>> Greensbur Central Catholic got 23 points from Geoff Helm but it wasn't enough as the Centurions fell to first place Serra Catholic 63-39 in a Section 1-2A game. The Eagles jumped in front of GCC 19-6 after the first quarter and upped the lead to 32-17 at halftime. Central drops its record to (2-14, 2-6).
Derry Area 60 Riverview 38
>> Derry tallied up 42 points in the second and third quarters combined to pull away from Riverview and earn a 60-38 non-section win at home. Aidan Bushey came in with 19 points to lead the Trojans (7-7, 4-4).
GIRLS
Gateway 50 Franklin Regional 29
>> Franklin Regional couldn't recover from a slow first quarter in a 50-29 non-section loss to Gateway. The Panthers (8-9, 3-5) fell behind 13-4 after one and trailed 22-12 at the break. Isi Palamone was the top scorer for Franklin Regional with seven points.
