Woodland Hills 84 Latrobe 79 LISTEN BROADCAST
>> Latrobe opened Section 3-6A play with an 84-79 loss to Woodland Hills at home Friday. It was an entertaining up-and-down game throughout with the Wildcats leading 40-37 at halftime with Latrobe leading by as much as nine in the second quarter. But the Wolverines ended the third quarter with a 62-59 lead. In the fourth quarter, the lead changed hands four times in the final minutes. The Wildcats (2-2, 0-1) missed two three-pointers to tie the game and Woodland Hills buried two free throws to put the game on ice. Marcus Dudzenski, playing in his first game for Latrobe returning from a hip injury, scored a team-high 24 points including 10 in the first quarter. Bryce Butler tallied 22 points while Reed Fenton came in with 15.
Fox Chapel 61 Hempfield 48
>> Hempfield couldn't recover from a tough first half and dropped its Section 3-6A opener at Fox Chapel 61-48. The Spartans found themselves down 17-9 after the first quarter and it swelled to 40-19 at halftime. Hempfield outscored the Foxes 29-21 in the second half but the deficit was too much to overcome. Braden Brose put in a game-high 19 points for the Spartans (1-3, 0-1). Marcus McCarthy ended with 11.
Derry Area 63 Yough 33
>> Derry outscored Yough in every quarter en route to a 63-33 Section 1-4A opening victory at home. The Trojans (2-1, 1-0) held a 10-5 advantage after the first quarter and built the lead to 24-10 at the break. They also outscored the Cougars 18-8 in the third quarter. Tanner Nicely led Derry with 15 points. Aidan Bushey tossed in 13 and Angelo Copelli finished with 12 points on four 3-pointers.
Greensburg Central Catholic 60 Springdale 48
>> Greensburg Central Catholic recovered from a rough start to win its first game of the season over Springdale 60-48 in the first game of Section 1-2A play. The Dynamos raced out to a 19-7 lead after the first eight minutes but GCC trimmed the deficit to 28-21 at halftime. In the second half, the Centurions rallied to outscore Springdale 39-20 and take the victory. Geoff Helm's 21 points paced Greensburg Central Catholic (1-4, 1-0). Max Pisula came in with 16 points and Ethan Slike tallied 11.
Jeannette 67 Summit Academy 37
>> Jeannette opened the season with a lopsided 67-37 Section 1-2A victory over Summit Academy. The Jayhawks held a slim 8-6 lead after the first quarter but went on an 18-8 run in the second quarter and also outscored Summit Academy 22-9 in the third quarter. Tre Cunningham poured in 22 points to lead Jeannette (1-0, 1-0). Robert Kennedy scored 13 points and A.J. Sharp chipped in with 12. The Jayhawks had to pull out of two early season tournaments because many players were on the football team's state championship run.
Norwin 53 Brashear 44
>> Norwin built up a 35-23 lead at halftime and held off Brashear to take the non-section win 53-44. Gage Luptak, Josh Ratesic and Jayden Walker each scored 10 points to lead the Knights (4-1, 0-0).
J.P. Taravella (Fla.) 62 Penn-Trafford 53
>> Penn-Trafford couldn't recover from a poor second quarter in a 62-53 loss to J.P. Taravella in the first game of the Kreul Classic in Coral Springs, Florida. The Warriors (1-2, 0-0) were ahead 20-14 after the first quarter but were outscored 14-4 in the second quarter and 16-10 in the third frame. C.J. DeStefano and Zach Rocco both scored 18 points to lead Penn-Trafford which will play Barringer High School out of New Jersey today at 4:15 p.m.
