SHU women cap off 3-0 week with thrilling win; Griffins men capture first victory of the season

SHU Women's Basketball (9-4, 4-1): The Seton Hill women went a perfect 3-0 this week capturing victories in a trio of PSAC crossover games.

On Tuesday, the Griffins scored a 73-53 win over West Chester. SHU outscored the Golden Rams in every quarter except the fourth. Cheyenne Trest poured in a season-high 19 points with Samantha Kosmacki and Sonia Sarda adding 15 and 12 points respectively.

Seton Hill earned a 66-43 victory over Millersville on Saturday. The Griffins were down 16-14 after one but went into halftime ahead 30-22 and extended the lead to 50-28 through three. Christiane Frye collected 16 points, four assists and six rebounds. Katie Nolan came in with 11.

Perhaps the biggest win of the week came against previously undefeated Shepherd on Sunday. Trailing 57-51 with under four minutes to play, SHU went on a 10-2 run to knock off the Rams 61-59. The game-winning basket came on a layup by Nolan off of a dish from Trest with just 16 seconds remaining. Nolan finished with 18 points and nine rebounds while Sarda added 13 points. Frye was excellent defensively, finishing with four steals. She also put in 10 points and collected six rebounds.

SHU Men's Basketball (1-9, 1-4): The Griffins men went 1-2 last week but earned their first victory of the season on Sunday.

The week began as Seton Hill dropped a 95-82 decision to West Chester on Tuesday. Samuel Tabe and Jimmy Moon each paced the offense with 19 and 18 points respectively. Tabe grabbed eight rebounds. On Saturday, Millersville came into the McKenna Center and earned a 75-63 triumph against SHU. Moon scored 13 points in the contest while Drew Green added 11.

The Griffins were finally able to break through against Shepherd on Sunday, coming back to defeat the Rams 69-59. Seton Hill trailed 42-37 with under 12 minutes left in the second half but Tabe caught fire to bring his team back. The junior scored 12 points during a 16-2 run which gave the Griffins a 53-44 lead at the 5:11 mark of the second half. They would close out the game. Tabe finished with 18 points with Ryan Meis putting in 13. Moon pulled in 10 rebounds.

SHU is off until traveling to Shippensburg for a PSAC match up on January 5th.

SHU Wrestling (1-1, 0-1): Nine members of the Seton Hill wrestling program took part in the Midwest Classic hosted by UIndy this weekend. Joel Cawoski opened with a loss at 141 pounds but advanced in the consolation bracket with three straight wins by fall and two decisions. Cawoski made it to the second day but dropped his first match on Sunday.

Five Griffins opened the tournament with wins in the first round matches. Frank Bonura won by tech fall (18-2) at 125 pounds. William Burgess opened with a 4-2 decision at 133 pounds. Colby Romjue, Luke Ewing and Brandon Matthews each won their opening match by fall. Romjue won at 165 pounds (5:19), Ewing at 174 pounds (5:32) and Matthews at 184 pounds (2:42). All four but Ewing then lost their two matches to be eliminated from the tournament. Ewing won one of his consolation round matches.

Logan McKoy dropped his first match before winning two matches in the consolation round. He was then eliminated in the consolation round. Brandon Finnerty and John Meyers each went 0-2 in the tournament.
