The defending Penguins Cup Class A champion Norwin Knights looked the part of a title contender once again on Monday, as Norwin scored six unanswered goals over the final two periods to defeat Shaler Area 7-1.

With the triumph, the Knights improved to 3-0-0, and moved into a tie for first place in the Class A Blue Division with Fox Chapel Area. The Titans, meanwhile, dropped to 1-2-0.

Playing on their home ice at the Palmer Imaging Arena in Delmont for the first time this season, the Knights received prolific performances from the trio of Joe Vecchio, Mario Cavallaro, and Alex Thomas. Vecchio scored a hat trick and added an assist, Cavallaro notched one goal and dished out four assists, and Thomas netted three points in his return from injury.

Although the final score was lopsided, the game was tightly contested for the first half of play. The Knights opened the scoring approximately two minutes into the first, when Cade Zeravica pounded in a rebound past Shaler Area goalie Shane Ciganik. The Titans tightened up defensively, though, and scored the equalizer later in the period, courtesy of Luca Wallander.

While the contest remained deadlocked for the early stages of the second, the Knights gained command with three goals in just more than five minutes of action. During the surge, Vecchio scored twice, Thomas tallied his first goal of the season, and Cavallaro recorded the primary assist on all three goals.

That same trio accounted for a goal each in the third to seal the outcome.

Norwin goaltender Owen Burmeister made 27 saves to earn the win.

In the defeat, Ciganik made 30 saves, several in spectacular fashion.

Norwin returns to the ice next Tuesday at 8:30, as the Knights will host Greensburg Salem, which will be broadcast on the Westmoreland Sports Network.
