Greater Latrobe's Bell, Walters capture WPIAL AAA girls tennis title

After battling to a second place finish in 2019, the Greater Latrobe duos team of Jenna Bell and Carolina Walters captured the WPIAL AAA girls tennis doubles championship on Thursday defeating top-seeded Elana Sobol and Rachel Nath of Shady Side Academy 6-3, 6-3 at North Allegheny.

The second-seeded pair opened the tournament on Wednesday with a 10-1 victory against Hampton's Megan King and Grace Stitt then defeated the team of Katie Peterson and Lily Sierka of Bethel Park 10-0 in the quarterfinals. In the semis, Bell and Walters took down No. 6 seed Maria Lounder and Amanda Koren of Moon before claiming the title on Thursday.

Bell and Walters will next compete in the PIAA playoffs. They went 1-1 in their previous appearance in 2019.

Elsewhere in Class AAA, the team of Ellen Liu and Sarah Gardner from Franklin Regional lost to Isabella Liu-Lopez and Abby Santora of Oakland Catholic in the first round 10-6. Norwin's Jenna Beach and Sydney Pesarsick fell to Peterson and Sierka 10-4 in the opening round and another team from Greater Latrobe, Maya Jain and Emily Pierce, lost their fist match 10-6 to Evie Ellenberger and Claire Loomis of Upper St. Clair.

In Class AA, the team of Eden Richey and Rachel Schrock from Valley lost in the quarterfinals 10-1 to eventual WPIAL champion Madilyn Rimbey and Peja Cruise of Montour. The teams of Alycia Derry and Elle Pawlikowsky of Southmoreland along with Burrell's Caroline Dynka and Jillian Perry both suffered first round defeats.
