Belle Vernon named top seed in Class 4A; Mt. Pleasant seeded third in 3A

The 2024 WPIAL high school baseball playoffs will begin on Tuesday, May 14th as 12 Westmoreland County teams prepare to compete in the postseason.

The Class 6A playoffs begin with quarterfinal round games as No. 4 Hempfield Area (14-6) will match up with No. 5 Seneca Valley (10-8) on Monday May 20th at a site and time to be determined. Also in the classification, Norwin (11-9) received the sixth seed and will play third-seeded North Allegheny (14-5) on Monday, May 20th at a site and time TBD.

In Class 5A, four teams finished tied for first place in Section 1 including Franklin Regional and Penn-Trafford. The Panthers (12-7) were awarded the No. 6 seed and draw No. 11 Connellsville (11-9) in the first round on Wednesday, May 15th at 4:30 p.m. at Gateway. The game prior pits the No. 7 Warriors (15-3) against No. 10 Moon (9-7) which begins at 2 p.m.

After Belle Vernon's sweep of Greater Latrobe to end the regular season, the Leopards (13-3) earned the top seed in Class 4A and will take on No. 16 Blackhawk (7-10) on Wednesday, May 15th at 4:30 p.m. at Boyce-Mayview Park. Meanwhile the fifth-seeded Wildcats (16-4) open the postseason against No. 12 Hopewell (9-9) on Wednesday, 4 p.m. at Plum. Elsewhere, Kiski Area received the 10th seed as the Cavaliers (11-8) face off against No. 7 Chartiers Valley (11-6) on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at North Allegheny.

Three local teams will battle in Class 3A beginning with third-seeded Mount Pleasant as the Vikings (13-4) will play No. 14 Burrell (9-7) in the first round on Tuesday, May 14th, 4:30 p.m. at Gateway. No. 5 Valley (16-4) opens against No. 12 Shenango (9-9) on Tuesday at North Allegheny. Also in the class, No. 10 Greensburg Salem faces off against No. 7 Avonworth (12-8) on Tuesday, 2 p.m. at Shaler.

Finally in Class 2A, No. 5 Greensburg Central Catholic (11-4) meets No. 12 Washington in a first round match up on Tuesday, May 14th at Gateway starting at 2 p.m. Jeannette received the 13th seed and will match up against fourth-seeded Burgettstown (11-3) on Tuesday, 7 p.m. at Burkett's Park in McKees Rocks.
