McKEESPORT - The McKeesport Area Tigers are off to their best start in years. Tuesday afternoon at McKeesport Area High School’s softball field the “red & blue”, in rather short order, dispatched the Taylor Allderdice Dragons 11-1 in five innings.
The win raised the Tigers record to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in Section 2-AAAA. Taylor Allderdice in their first season as a member of the WPIAL saw their record drop to 0-3 overall and 0-3 in Section 2-AAAA.
After Tuesday’s win the Tigers have outscored their first seven opponents by a staggering margin of 69-6!
The “Sweet 16” Softball Program’s Player-of-the-Game is McKeesport's terrific junior pitcher Jess Beitler.
It has been a remarkable start to the 2013 season for Ms. Beitler. She was named on Monday as the “Sweet 16” Softball Program’s Class AAAA Co-Player-of-the-Week for the week of April 1-7, 2013.
In the circle, Jess pitched a complete game on Tuesday as she went five innings in the mercy rule victory. Beitler allowed only one hit (a fifth inning single to right field), struck out seven, walked two and allowed one unearned run for her seventh win of the season.
Jess is also a dangerous hitter. Batting in the clean-up spot for head coach Melissa Conrad, Beitler went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI and one run scored.
Coach Conrad says that Beitler is a very versatile player who can also play shortstop, third base and catcher. Watching her development since her freshman season one can readily see how well she has matured and worked hard into turning herself into one of the top players in Class AAAA.
The Tigers brought their heavy hitting offensive attack into slaying the Dragons - recording 15 hits including four doubles and one triple.
Freshman left fielder and lead-off batter Dominique Clark went 3-for-4 with a RBI and two runs scored.
Next up for the Tigers is a big Section 2-AAAA game on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. against Gateway which is 3-1 in Section 2-AAAA and 3-2 overall. The Gators lost on Tuesday afternoon at Plum 10-4. McKeesport Area will be trying to stay tied for first place in the section with Plum (4-0 in Section 2-AAAA and 4-0 overall).
The Tigers next “Sweet 16” Softball Program broadcast will be on Friday, April 19th at 3:30 p.m. at home against Class AAA West Mifflin.
