Jeannette's defense held Greensburg Central Catholic to 10 points in season finale.
JEANNETTE -- The past three years haven't held much success for the Jeannette Jayhawks in their rivalry with the Greensburg Central Catholic Centurions.
That changed Friday night.
Though only 23 points were scored between two of the best offenses in the WPIAL, it was the Jayhawks (9-0, 8-0) winning the field position battle to earn one more field goal and down the Centurions (8-1, 7-1), 13-10, and claiming the 2011 Interstate Conference crown.
In a regular season that was controlled offensively by big names like Demetrious Cox, Shavonta Craft and Jordan Edmunds, the winning points in Friday's season finale came off the boot of Seth Miller. The junior kicker and backup quarterback hit two field goals in the first half from 38 and 25 yards respectively.
GCC aided Jeannette in the first quarter with four offside calls.
Jeannette's only touchdown came in the third quarter off a 2-yard run by Jordan Edmunds.
The Jayhawks weren't the only ones having difficulty with the running game as Jordan McCrae was kept off the score sheet and silenced by Jeannette's front seven.
Greensburg Central Catholic's Bobbie Noble and the Centurion's passing game was held in check by the Jayhawk pass-rushing, led by Brandon Krautz and Logan Hoak.
There was one bright spot in the GCC passing game in the fourth quarter when Noble hit wide receiver P.J. Biros, who made an acrobatic juggling catch for a 43 yard pitch-and-catch touchdown.
The Centurions other points came off a 25-yard Ben Kisiel field goal in the second quarter.
The Jayhawks were driving near the end of the fourth quarter until Jordan Edmunds fumbled on the Centurion 3 yard line with 2:32 remaining.
Central and Jeannette exchanged possessions by turning the ball over on downs before GCC was in possession for the final 20 seconds of the game. The Centurions last gasp was a 15 yard run by McCrae to his own 17 yard line.
With the Jayhawks' strong finish over opponents like Mount Pleasant and Greensburg Central Catholic, Jeannette looks to land a three or four spot in the WPIAL playoffs. The Centurions are still a likely candidate for the fifth seed.
