Westmoreland County boys basketball section results from January 22nd 2021:
Franklin Regional 71 Kiski Area 47
>> Franklin Regional won its third straight game defeating Kiski Area 71-47 in Section 3-5A play. After a high scoring first quarter which saw the Panthers lead 21-17, Franklin Regional took control of the game in the second quarter outscoring the Cavaliers 19-4. Kadyn Hannah poured in a game-best 25 points for the Panthers (4-1, 4-0). Hannah scored 20 points in FR's against Gateway on Tuesday. Caden Smith and Luke Kimmich also finished in double figures with 17 and 16 points respectively. James Pearson put in 18 points to pace Kiski Area (1-5, 1-3).
Latrobe 53 Woodland Hills 52 WATCH BROADCAST
>> Ryan Sickenberger canned a three-pointer with just eight seconds left to complete Latrobe's comeback victory over Woodland Hills 53-52 in Section 3-5A action. The Wildcats trailed 34-22 at halftime but used a 31-18 scoring edge in the second half to secure the win. Frank Newill scored 18 points to lead Latrobe (3-3, 3-2). Chase Sickenberger came in with 17 points and Ryan Sickenberger finished his night with 12 points including the big shot to win it.
Hempfield 51 Norwin 50 WATCH BROADCAST
>> Mike Hosni connected on one-of-two free throws with just 3.6 seconds left to lift Hempfield to a hard fought 51-50 Section 3-6A victory at Norwin. It was a tight game throughout, with the Spartans leading 23-22 at halftime and the game tied at 35-35 after three. The Knights never led in the fourth quarter but stayed within one or two possessions of Hempfield and tied the game twice including Ty Bilinsky's two free throws with 11.4 seconds left to tie the game at 50-50. Hosni drew a foul the other way, missed his first free throw but sunk his second to put Hempfield ahead by one point. Norwin's Adam Bilinsky had a decent look at the potential game-winning shot but was long on the desperation three-point heave at the buzzer.
Belle Vernon 78 Mt. Pleasant 39
>> First place Belle Vernon raced out to a 23-7 lead and never looked back in a 78-39 Section 3-4A win over Mt. Pleasant at home. Jake Haney's 25 points led all scorers for the Leopards (4-1, 3-0). Devin Whitlock came in with 17 points and Daniel Gordon chipped in with 12. Jake Bungard tallied 10 points to lead the Vikings (2-4, 2-2).
Uniontown 66 Yough 61
>> Yough tried to claw back from a 16-point halftime deficit but fell short, losing to Uniontown 66-61 in a Section 3-4A match up. The Cougars trailed 42-26 at halftime but outscored the Red Raiders 35-24 in the second half. It wasn't quite enough, however. Yough's Gamal Marballie scored a game-high 24 points. Derek Crosby added 17 points and Christian Park ended with 11 for the Cougars (2-4, 1-3).
South Allegheny 59 Ligonier Valley 25
>> Ligonier Valley finally played in its first game of the season but dug itself an early hole and lost to South Allegheny 59-25 in Section 3-3A. The Rams were behind 13-4 after the first quarter. Matthew Marinchak scored seven points to lead Ligonier Valley (0-1, 0-1).
Penn-Trafford 57 Canon-McMillan 40
>> Penn-Trafford stopped a two-game skid with a 57-40 non-section triumph at Canon-McMillan. The Warriors built up a 42-21 lead through three quarters. Josh Kapcin put in 17 points to pace Penn-Trafford (4-2, 1-2). Joining Kapcin in double figures was Nick Crum and Chase Vecchio with 11 points each.
Jeannette 51 East Allegheny 45
>> Jeannette used a big fourth quarter to down East Allegheny in non-section play 51-45. The Jayhawks were behind 38-32 after three frames but ended the game on a 19-7 run to claim the victory. Keith Rockmore topped Jeannette with 16 points. Jimmy Sanders added 10 for the Jayhawks (3-1, 2-1).
Shaler 70 Derry Area 58
>> Derry couldn't build on a hot start and dropped a non-section match up to Shaler 70-58 at home. The Trojans (0-3, 0-2) went ahead 18-10 after one but saw the Titans take a 37-30 advantage into halftime.
Frazier 54 Southmoreland 39
>> Southmoreland went down 13-5 after the first eight minutes and couldn't recover in a non-section 54-39 defeat to Frazier. Kelvin Lin's 14 points paced the Scotties (1-5, 0-3). Ty Keffer put in 10.
