Westmoreland County girls basketball section results from January 11th 2021:
Latrobe 58 McKeesport 53
>> Elle Snyder poured in 22 points to lead Latrobe to a 58-53 victory over McKeesport in a Section 4-5A match up. The Wildcats were down 12-11 after one but took a 23-20 lead into halftime and built it to a 40-35 advantage after three quarters. In addition to Snyder, Anna Rafferty also finished in double-figures with 12 points for Latrobe (2-0, 2-0). The Wildcats travel to Gateway on Friday.
Norwin 62 Seneca Valley 29
>> Norwin raced out to a 20-7 lead and never looked back in a 62-29 Section 1-6A victory against Seneca Valley. The Knights outscored the Raiders in every quarter. Brianna Zajicek paced Norwin with 19 points while Danielle Rosso chipped in with 17. The Knights (2-0, 2-0) host Butler on Thursday.
Penn-Trafford 55 North Hills 27
>> Penn-Trafford started slow but turned it on in the second quarter to cruise past North Hills 55-27 in Section 1-6A play. The Warriors found themselves down 18-12 after one but outscored the Indians 8-1 in the second quarter to take a 20-19 advantage at halftime. P-T really found its stride in the second half holding a 35-8 edge in scoring to finish the game. Allie Prady put in 15 points to lead Penn-Trafford (3-0, 2-0) while Kenzie Powell added 13. The Warriors travel to Shaler on Thursday.
Canon-McMillan 37 Hempfield 36
>> Canon-McMillan's Kelsey Wandera connected on two last-second free throws to help lift Canon-McMillan to a 37-36 victory over Hempfield in Section 2-6A action. Emma Hoffner scored 10 points for the Spartans who led the game 27-25 after three quarters. Hempfield (0-1, 0-1) hosts Bethel Park on January 21st.
Deer Lakes 66 Derry Area 33
>> Derry opened the season with a 66-33 loss at Deer Lakes in Section 1-4A. The Trojans were down by just four points after the first quarter, 14-10, but the Lancers took a 31-16 lead into the halftime break. Tiana Moracco was the high-scorer for Derry with 14 points. The Trojans (0-1, 0-1) host Burrell on Thursday.
Southmoreland 53 Elizabeth Forward 40
>> Three players finished in double-figures for Southmoreland as the Scotties earned a 53-40 home victory against Elizabeth Forward in Section 3-4A. Olivia Cernuto poured in a game-high 19 points while Gracie Spadaro added 13. Delaynie Morvosh scored 10 for Southmoreland (2-0, 1-0). The Scotties travel to Mt. Pleasant on Thursday.
Mt. Pleasant 37 Yough 26
>> Mt. Pleasant opened Section 3-4A play with a 37-26 victory over Yough at home in a low-scoring battle. The Vikings held leads of 11-9 after one and 23-17 at the halftime break. Laney Gerdich put in 10 points for Mt. Pleasant (3-0, 1-0). Bailey Alli scored a game-high 17 points for the Cougars (0-1, 0-1). Mt. Pleasant hosts Southmoreland on Thursday while Yough welcomes non-section California on Friday.
Armstrong 71 Jeannette 25
>> Jeannette dropped its second non-section game of the season falling to Armstrong on the road 71-25. McKenzie Rigney tallied 12 points for the Jayhawks (0-2, 0-0) who open section play at Winchester Thurston on Thursday.
